Custom cabinetry help for Lakeland-area homeowners
Cabinets do more work than almost anything else in a house. They hold the dishes, the towels, the files, the shoes and the television, and when they do not fit the space or the way you live, you notice every day. Custom cabinetry is built for one room, to its exact measurements, so storage goes where you need it instead of where a catalog size happens to fit.
Custom Cabinets Lakeland helps homeowners move from "we need more storage" to a clear plan. We connect you with independent local cabinetmakers and installers who design, build and install cabinetry across Lakeland, Polk County and eastern Hillsborough County. We are not the contractor. The contractor you choose measures, designs, quotes, builds, installs and warrants the work. Our job is to make the first step easy, give you honest information before you commit to anything, and put your project in front of the right people.
Start whichever way suits you. Call 863-372-9151 at any hour, or send your details through the estimate form. Tell us where you live, which room you are working on and roughly what you have in mind. Nothing is booked when you submit a request, and there is no obligation.
This page covers what most homeowners want to know before the first conversation: the kinds of projects available, what custom cabinets tend to cost, when permits come into play, how Florida humidity affects cabinetry, and how to compare cabinetmakers.

Stock, semi-custom or custom?
Stock cabinets are built ahead of time in standard widths and a few finishes. They cost the least and arrive fastest, but filler strips and wasted corners are common.
Semi-custom cabinets start from standard boxes with more sizes, door styles, finishes and inserts. They suit many kitchens and bathrooms with ordinary dimensions.
Custom cabinets are built for one space. They can run to the ceiling, fit around windows and angled walls, and include storage designed for exactly what you own. They also give you the widest choice of wood, door profiles and painted colors.
Custom is not always necessary. If your room has standard dimensions and you are happy with catalog options, semi-custom may be enough. Custom earns its cost in rooms with awkward spaces, in older homes where nothing is square, and for built-ins, closets and media walls that have to fit the house exactly.
How much do custom cabinets cost?
We do not have a Lakeland price list, and we would be skeptical of anyone who quotes a firm number before measuring your space. What we can share are published national figures, so you know roughly where your project is likely to land. A written estimate from your cabinetmaker is what actually counts.
| Project | Typical national figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Custom cabinets (all projects) | $2,799 – $12,942 (average about $7,429) | Angi |
| Full kitchen, 35+ linear feet | $20,000 – $30,000 | Angi |
| Bathroom vanity, installed | $400 – $2,200 (average about $1,500) | Angi |
| Built-in cabinets | $2,000 – $7,500 (average about $4,500) | Angi |
| Walk-in closet | $1,000 – $8,000 | Angi |
| Built-in desk | $1,500 – $6,000 | Angi |
| Built-in entertainment center | About $4,000 average | Angi |
National figures retrieved October 2026. Not quotes for your home.
The biggest cost drivers are the number of linear feet, the materials and door style, the finish, specialty inserts such as pull-outs and lighting, and how much demolition, plumbing or electrical work is involved. Countertops and appliances are usually priced separately.
Ask every cabinetmaker for an itemized estimate that lists design, materials, finish, hardware, removal of old cabinets, installation, any trade work and the warranty, so you can compare bids fairly. Each service page has a more detailed breakdown.
How a custom cabinet project works
Every shop runs its own process, but most projects follow a similar path.
- Share your project. Tell us your address, the room, what is not working and any photos or inspiration pictures.
- Talk it through. A local cabinetmaker follows up to discuss the space, your goals, budget and timing.
- Measure and design. The cabinetmaker measures on site and prepares a layout, often with drawings of each wall.
- Written estimate. You receive an itemized estimate covering materials, finish, hardware, installation, schedule and warranty.
- Approve and order. You approve the design and finish samples. Fabrication starts, often with a deposit.
- Installation. Old cabinets come out, any plumbing or electrical rough-in is done, and new cabinets are set, leveled, scribed and trimmed.
- Finishing touches. Countertops are templated if needed, hardware is adjusted and you walk the finished project with the installer.

Permits for cabinet projects in Polk and Hillsborough
Cabinets alone rarely need a permit. The work around them sometimes does.
City of Lakeland
The City of Lakeland's Building Inspection FAQ lists replacing cabinets as work that does not need a permit, while remodels and alterations, plumbing and electrical work do. It asks homeowners to call before starting a project to confirm (863-834-6012).
Unincorporated Polk County
Polk County's Building Division handles unincorporated areas such as Lakeland Highlands, Highland City and Kathleen. Its main office is at 330 W. Church St. in Bartow (863-534-6080), and applications go through its Access Portal.
Hillsborough County and Plant City
Hillsborough County's homeowner permit page says most construction needs a permit but describes cabinet work, shelving, tile and painting as typically cosmetic, and notes that a bathroom remodel involving plumbing would likely need one. Inside Plant City, the city's Building Division issues permits (813-659-4254).
Other cities
Winter Haven, Bartow, Auburndale, Haines City, Lake Wales and the other cities handle permits inside their own limits. A mailing address is not a reliable guide, so confirm which office covers your property.
Florida humidity and your cabinets
Moisture. Central Florida is humid much of the year. Plywood boxes, sealed edges and quality finishes hold up better than raw particleboard, especially around sinks, in bathrooms and in laundry rooms.
Wood movement. Solid wood expands and contracts with humidity. Painted doors made from MDF resist the hairline cracks that can open at solid-wood joints.
Garages and outbuildings. Spaces without air conditioning get hot and damp. Ask about materials made for garages if you want storage there.
Leaks. Before new cabinets go in, check under the old sink for leaks and soft subfloor. Fixing them first protects the new work.
How to compare cabinetmakers
- See their work. Ask for photos and, where possible, references for projects like yours.
- Ask where the cabinets are made and what the boxes, shelves and drawers are built from.
- Ask about insurance. Request proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage.
- Check trade licenses. Plumbing and electrical work must be done by licensed contractors. You can look up Florida state licenses with the DBPR license search, and ask about any local licensing for cabinet installation.
- Get an itemized written estimate and compare materials, finish, hardware and warranty, not just the total.
- Confirm the schedule and payment terms in writing, including deposits.
Contractors in our network are reviewed for license and insurance where applicable before they receive inquiries. We still encourage you to do your own checks. Read more on how our team works and in our referral and marketing disclosure.

Custom cabinet questions, answered
How much do custom cabinets cost?
It depends on how many linear feet you need, the materials and the finish. Angi puts the national average for custom cabinet projects at about $7,429, with most between $2,799 and $12,942, and about $500 to $1,500 or more per linear foot. A full kitchen with 35 or more linear feet runs about $20,000 to $30,000 nationally. These are national figures, not local quotes.
What is the difference between stock, semi-custom and custom cabinets?
Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes and finishes. Semi-custom cabinets start from standard boxes with more size and style options. Custom cabinets are built for one space, to its exact measurements, with your choice of materials, doors and finishes.
Do I need a permit to replace cabinets?
Usually not for the cabinets alone. The City of Lakeland lists replacing cabinets as work that does not need a permit, and Hillsborough County describes cabinet work as typically cosmetic. Moving plumbing, adding electrical work or changing walls generally does need a permit. Your contractor should confirm with the office that covers your address.
How long does a custom cabinet project take?
Design and fabrication usually take several weeks, depending on the shop and the season. Installation is often a matter of days for a kitchen and a day or two for a vanity, closet or built-in. Ask for the full schedule in writing.
Which areas do you serve?
Homeowners across Polk County, including Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow, Auburndale, Haines City, Davenport and Lake Wales, plus Plant City, Brandon, Valrico, Seffner, Dover and Lithia in eastern Hillsborough County. Share your address so contractor availability can be confirmed.

The line is open 24 hours a day. Calls are answered by an automated receptionist that collects your details, and calls are tracked and may be transcribed so your request can be passed on accurately. See our privacy policy and referral and marketing disclosure.
