What custom kitchen cabinets are
Most kitchen cabinets come in three levels. Stock cabinets are built ahead of time in standard sizes. Semi-custom cabinets start from standard boxes with more choices of sizes, doors and finishes. Fully custom cabinets are built for one kitchen, to its exact measurements, so they can fill odd walls, run to the ceiling, wrap around windows and hold exactly what you need to store.
Custom makes the most sense when a standard layout leaves wasted space: a kitchen with angled walls, low soffits, an unusual window, a tall ceiling, or a homeowner who wants specific storage such as deep pot drawers, a pull-out spice rack, a built-in coffee station or a pantry cabinet sized to the inch. It also makes sense when you want a particular wood, door profile or painted color that stock lines do not offer.
Custom Cabinets Lakeland connects Lakeland-area homeowners with independent local cabinetmakers and installers. The contractor you choose measures, designs, builds, installs and warrants the cabinets. Call 863-372-9151 any time to describe your kitchen.

Planning a kitchen cabinet layout
A good layout starts with how the kitchen is used, not with a catalog. Before the first meeting, think about what frustrates you now and what you want to keep.
- Work zones. Prep space near the sink, landing space beside the refrigerator and cooktop, and a clear path between them.
- Drawers over doors. Deep drawers in base cabinets are easier to use than shelves behind doors for pots, dishes and food storage.
- Corners. Blind corners can use lazy Susans, swing-out shelves or simply a drawer bank on the other wall.
- Tall storage. Pantry cabinets, oven towers and cabinets that run to the ceiling add storage without taking more floor space.
- Islands. An island can add drawers, a sink or cooktop, seating, or a microwave drawer, but it needs clearance on every side.
- Appliances. Have appliance models and sizes chosen early. Custom cabinets are built to the inch, and a different refrigerator can mean rebuilding a panel.
Bring photos, rough measurements, your appliance list and any inspiration pictures. A cabinetmaker will take final measurements and draw the plan, often with elevations for each wall.
Materials, doors and finishes
Boxes. Cabinet boxes are usually plywood or MDF/particleboard. Plywood holds screws well and resists moisture better, which matters around sinks and in Florida humidity. Ask what the box, back and shelves are made of.
Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker-style flat-panel doors are the most common choice. Slab doors give a modern look, and raised-panel doors a traditional one. Solid wood, MDF for painted doors, and veneers are all common. Painted MDF doors resist the seasonal movement that can crack paint at solid-wood joints.
Finishes. Factory-sprayed or catalyzed finishes are tougher than brushed paint. Stained wood shows grain and hides wear differently from paint. Ask how touch-ups are handled.
Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension drawer slides are standard on most custom work now. Pulls and knobs are an easy way to change the look.
How much do custom kitchen cabinets cost?
We do not have a Lakeland price list, and nobody can quote a firm number without measuring your kitchen. These national figures from Angi show the general range.
| Project | Typical national range |
|---|---|
| Custom cabinets (all projects) | $2,799 – $12,942 (average about $7,429) |
| Price per linear foot | About $500 for basic designs to $1,500+ for high-end materials and complex layouts |
| Partial installation (one wall, island or select areas) | $3,000 – $8,000 |
| Galley kitchen, 20–30 linear feet | $12,000 – $18,000 |
| Full kitchen, 35+ linear feet | $20,000 – $30,000 |
| Labor | $50 – $200 per hour |

The biggest cost drivers are the number of linear feet, the materials and door style, the finish, specialty inserts and the amount of demolition and wall or plumbing work. Countertops, backsplash, appliances, plumbing and electrical work are usually priced separately, so ask what the cabinet estimate includes.
Permits and kitchen projects
Cabinet work by itself is usually not the part that needs a permit. The City of Lakeland's Building Inspection FAQ lists replacing cabinets as work that does not need a permit, while remodels, alterations, plumbing and electrical work do. Hillsborough County's homeowner permit page likewise describes cabinet work and shelving as typically cosmetic. If your project moves a sink, adds outlets or lighting, or opens a wall, expect a permit and have your contractor confirm with the office that covers your address.
What to ask a cabinetmaker
- Do you build the cabinets yourself, or order them? Where are they made?
- What are the boxes, shelves and drawer boxes made of?
- Who measures, and who installs?
- Does the estimate include removal of the old cabinets, countertop templating, hardware, trim and filler panels?
- Who handles plumbing, electrical and any permit?
- What is the lead time, and how long is installation?
- What warranty covers the cabinets, finish and hardware?
How a custom kitchen cabinets project works
- Share your project by phone or the estimate form: your address, the room and what you want.
- A local cabinetmaker follows up to talk through the space, budget and timing.
- Measure and design. Final measurements are taken on site and a layout is drawn.
- Written estimate covering materials, finish, hardware, installation, schedule and warranty.
- Fabrication and installation once you approve the design and finish samples.
Nothing is booked when you call or send the form, and the decision to proceed is yours.

Custom Kitchen Cabinets questions
How long does it take to get custom kitchen cabinets?
It varies by shop and season. Building custom cabinets usually takes several weeks after the design is approved, and installation takes days rather than weeks for most kitchens. Ask each cabinetmaker for their current lead time in writing.
Are custom cabinets worth it compared with stock?
They are worth considering when a standard layout wastes space, when you need specific storage, or when you want a material or finish that stock lines do not offer. For a simple, standard-sized kitchen, semi-custom cabinets may be enough.
Can I keep my countertops and replace only the cabinets?
Sometimes, but it is risky. Granite and quartz tops can crack when removed, and new cabinets must match the old footprint exactly. Ask the installer to assess the countertops before you plan around them.
Do I need a permit for new kitchen cabinets?
Replacing cabinets on its own usually does not need a permit, according to the City of Lakeland. Moving plumbing, adding electrical work or changing walls generally does. Confirm with the office that covers your address.
